Dunedin – A hectic but productive week!

Hi Everyone!

I realised last week that I never properly introduced myself! So here we go:

Hi! I’m Tom and I’m a 20 year old 3rd year Student at Otago Uni studying towards a BSc in Neuroscience. I’m also a freelance web developer.

What makes me a little different from all the other regional co-ordinators is the fact that I’m a little younger and I’m still a student.

So this week has been a little crazy. With pre easter assignment deadlines and multiple hours in the lab working on my research project I haven’t been able to spend as much time as I would have liked on LIFEHACK. But the time I have spent has been productive!

I’m really pleased to announce that we now have a confirmed venue! We looked high and low around Dunedin for the best venue and we think we have the best one possible in The Hunter Center at the University of Otago.

During the week the Hunter Centre is the social home to all of the professional health science courses. It also contains tutorial rooms for everything from Medicine to Dentistry to Physiotherapy.

Located in Great King St, opposite the University School of Dentistry and Dunedin Hospital, the two-level facility has 1690sq meters of teaching, study, social, retail and administrative space.

It was also the first structure in Dunedin designed to meet the New Zealand Green Building Council’s green star rating system for sustainable buildings.

In the Hunter Centre we will have space for teams to brake out into small tutorial rooms and also work together in the large atrium or seminar rooms on both the 1st and 2nd floor.

We’re really lucky that the University has come on board in lending us one of their newest buildings for the weekend! So we’re going to have to all be careful to take extra special care of it :).

I’d also like to introduce you to a good friend and my second in command Sophia Frentz. Sophia Frentz is a graduate of Otago University after majoring in Genetics and is currently doing research towards her honours year in specialising in Medical Genetics. She is Secretary for Science Community Otago and will be presenting at Haiku North America in August 2013 on Science Communication.

Both me and Sophia have a passion for mental health and helping those that need a little extra support. We’re excited to be organising LIFEHACK in Dunedin and are looking forward to seeing you all in late April.

I’m also lucky to be supported by a team of awesome volunteers who I will be introducing you to over the course of next few weeks.

That also reminds me that you need to register at lifehackhq.co if you are keen on coming!!! We need to balance registration numbers and collect important details like allergy and dietary requirements.

With all the interest we are worried that we might have to turn people away so if you are keen on coming you better make sure to register ASAP!

If you have any questions or are keen to be involved please feel free to email me at dunedin@lifehackhq.co or tweet me @tommmitchell

Hope everyone is looking forward to an awesome fair-trade chocolate filled easter.

Tom :)
