Crowdsourcing A Youth Wellbeing Map For Aotearoa

The Problem:

We’re often asked what kinds of projects are happening in the youth wellbeing space in Aotearoa New Zealand. Often we reel off a number of the projects we’ve worked with, ones we know about through our networks, and ones we’ve found when we research online.

People have to google the name, and often the projects aren’t well set up to be found. It’s a poor solution for sharing the wealth of projects which are happening around the country from grassroots initiatives to global programs.

The Solution:

So we’re asking you to help us crowdsource the ones you know about. Send us links. We’ll help curate the map. We’ll all benefit because of it.

Sound good?

Alright, well we made a start and reached out on twitter for help. Here’s where we’ve got to so far – please don’t be offended if you’re not on there this map is incomplete, that’s the point.

On a mobile device and map isn’t rendering properly? Click here for the web page.

What do we categorise as a Youth Wellbeing project?

  • Aimed primarily toward 12-24 year olds
  • The project ticks at least 2 boxes of 5 Ways to Wellbeing or Te Whare Tapa Whā – so for example the project enables young people to Connect (meet new people) and Take Notice (reflect on what they’ve learnt from this). If the project was only about Keep Learning – then essentially this would just be education. You’ll notice this can make things quite broad, which is good – we’d like to capture all the projects which sit right
  • Builds the capacity and skills of young people in these areas rather than making them reliant on the service to be well.
  • Project is more focused on keeping people well (protective or preventative) rather than ‘treating them’ at a crisis moment. This isn’t because crisis treatment isn’t important, but our mandate is to look at prevention and early interventions to build the wellbeing of young people of Aotearoa.

So, how can you help?

We didn’t know of any platform which would enable everyone to submit projects directly, which is a shame – so we’re hacking the submitting process:

  1. In the comments below : share with us some of the projects you know about . Send us links and any other information you have so we can add it to the map.
  2. On Twitter : send us a quick tweet on @lifehackhq with a link and some context like #wellbeingmap

Help us map Youth Wellbeing in Aotearoa – this is going to be epic!

    Hi,

Well done LifeHack, this is a great and well needed resource – will be sharing it with my friends and colleagues!

    A few projects that I’m a part of…

    – Bounce is a brand new Red Cross initiative promoting 5 wellbeing tips to young people 12-24 years. We’re using different approaches to promoting the 5 tips, including videos, music playlists, and photos, and there’s a whole lot more in the pipeline! I’m a volunteer peer educator for this project, check it out at bounce.org.nz and fb.com/bounce.org.nz
    – All Right? – already on the map, but I’m a health promoter for this campaign and happy to provide more info :)
    – MindfulTXT – this was a text-message based gratitude intervention for youth aged 16-21 years old that I pilot-tested last year for my Master’s project. I’m about to update my website MindfulTXT.wordpress.com, and will be working on developing this project this year.

Will update on any other projects I hear of.

    Thanks!

    Emily

I asked my school for community projects. This is an amazing one in the Waikato
    https://www.facebook.com/yourwowma
WOWMA for young Muslim women to connect and learn. They organise gatherings, learning sessions with community professionals and other events to support women’s wellbeing. (Especially cool as we have a lot of refugee muslims in the Waikato and it is great for them to have a safe community space to learn in)

Bounce is a bunch of tips, ideas and inspiration to help you live life well. Bounce is a New Zealand Red Cross project that partners with young people for young people.
